Man who stabbed stranger in Vancouver Tim Hortons released from prison

A man who stabbed a stranger inside a coffee shop in downtown Vancouver has been released from custody and continues to pose a “high risk” to the community, Vancouver police warned Friday.

David Morin, 30, was convicted of aggravated assault in the stabbing of a Mexican tourist inside a Tim Hortons on Jan. 22, 2022, and received a three-year prison sentence, authorities said.

The victim, who was stabbed repeatedly in the back and shoulder, survived.

“The Vancouver Police Department has now been informed that Morin has been granted statutory release by Correctional Service Canada and will be allowed to live in Vancouver while on parole,” Sgt. Steve Addison said in a news release.

“Police believe Morin poses a high risk of significant harm to the community, and that compelling circumstances exist to warn the public that he will be living in Vancouver.”

Authorities said Morin is required to follow a number of conditions while on parole. He cannot consume, purchase or possess alcohol or drugs, except prescribed medication and over-the-counter drugs. He is not to associate with anyone involved in criminal activity, have contact with the victim, ord possess knives, except in the preparation of food or for job-related reasons.

He also must report all intimate sexual and non-sexual relationships and friendships with women to his parole supervisor, authorities said.

Anyone who sees Morin breaching these conditions is asked to contact police.
