Manchester United have signed forward, Wout Weghorst on loan from Burnley until conclusion of 2022-23 season.
Weghorst has spent this season so far on a season-long loan to Turkey’s Besiktas after Burnley suffered relegation from the Premier League at end of last season, just months after the Dutch striker moved to Turf Moor in which he scored twice in 20 appearances.
During his spell at the Turkish club, Weghorst scored nine goals in 18 appearances across all competitions as Besiktas sit fifth in Super Lig and currently are in Quarter-Finals of this season’s Turkish Cup – in which Weghorst scored one goal during a comeback win against Sanliurfaspor.
Burnley though have now decided to terminate Weghorst’s loan at Besiktas following strong interest from Utd, who will cover the cost of Weghorst’s recall from Besiktas and his wages totalling £4m in total.
Speaking about his decision to move to Old Trafford, Weghorst said: “I feel privileged to be joining Manchester United. I’ve played against the club in the past and it’s a fantastic feeling to now have the chance to pull on the famous red shirt.
“I’ve seen United’s progress under Erik ten Hag this season and can’t wait to start playing my part in pushing the team towards its aims.
“Whatever happens in the next few months, I can promise to give everything to the club for as long as I am here.”
Weghorst represents the Netherlands in international football in which he has scored five goals in 19 senior appearances, of which two goals came in a brace against Argentina in the Dutch’s Quarter-Final exit at 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Weghorst could make his Utd debut away at Crystal Palace on Wednesday 18 January, after he failed to be registered in time for Utd’s Manchester derby against Manchester City tomorrow (14 January).
