Danish midfielder, Mathias Jensen has signed a new three-year contract at Brentford until end of 2025-26 season.
Jensen first joined Brentford from Celta Vigo in July 2019 and has since gone on to score five goals in 152 appearances, during which he helped the club clinch promotion to the Premier League in May 2021.
Brentford has consequently opted to reward him with a new three-and-a-half year contract with option for a further one-year extension, and speaking to Brentford’s Head of Content, Stu Wakeford, Jensen stated that his new contract “means a lot.”
Jensen went on to admit that his sole aim when he first joined was to help the Bees gain promotion to the Premier League, but is now “enjoying” his football in the top-flight.
Brentford are currently sat eighth in the Premier League midway through their second season in the modern top-flight, which Jensen is happy about as he believes that they are “going in the right direction” despite their fresh top-flight pedigree.
Brentford manager, Thomas Frank expressed his happiness at Jensen’s renewed commitment to the club, as he issued the following statement: “I think he has been one of our best players so far this season, after a stop-start season last year when he was unlucky with injuries and illness.
“He is showing what he can offer the team and the potential he has.
“He is clearly our set-piece man and we know he can dictate a game from the centre of midfield. I wanted him to add more goals and assists this season and he is doing that.”
Frank also reflected upon Jensen’s progress in three-and-a-half years at the Bees, as he added: “Matti has developed his pressing abilities this season, as well as his defensive mindset, which is so important for a Premier League midfield player.”
Jensen in-turn praised Frank as “a big influence” on his development as he commented; “He’s always trusted me, even though there have been times when I haven’t played as much as I wanted to, but I’m also aware that you need to perform when you get the chance.”
The Denmark international also spoke of his belief that he has “developed my aggression,” despite being “a technical player who doesn’t really enjoy the big tackles,” but feels that he is now a more aggressive “physical” player than when he first arrived in English Football.
Jensen though has further ambitions as he added: “And then, with the numbers, assists and goals, I don’t think I’d been doing well enough, so I’m also trying to add more of that to my game.”
“Now I’ve adapted to the tempo of the Premier League, then I think I’m more suited to this league. I’m not the quickest player, but I’m quite clever and I try to think forward, two steps ahead – I have to be good at that when I’m not the fastest player.
“So, if I can keep the tempo in my head, then I think I’m a good fit for the league.”
During his time in West London, Jensen earned his first senior international call-up for Denmark in 2020 as replacement for his injured teammate – Christian Norgaard, and has since scored one goal in 22 senior caps plus been involved in Euro 2020 and 2022 FIFA World Cup squads.
