More Person of Interest Photos Released and What to Make of the Backlash (Update) – HotAir

Utah public safety has released some additional photos of the same person of interest seen previously.

We’re releasing additional photos of the person of interest in connection with the murder of Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University. Please send all tips available to: https://t.co/XXzYBH1GkE pic.twitter.com/DgLOlrU6Cx

— Utah Public Safety (@UtahDPS) September 12, 2025

These photos don’t show much of his face. He seems to be almost intentionally avoiding the cameras by keeping his head down. But at least you can make out what’s on his t-shirt:

Not what I would expect:

This seems like something that might unironically be worn by a fan of Charlie Kirk, not someone who wanted to kill him. Is this camouflage, i.e. a way to blend into the crowd? Is it the wrong guy once again?

Also where is the rifle? We know he must have carried the rifle up to the roof and that he carried it down from the roof afterwards and left it in the woods nearby. But he’s obviously not carrying it in this image.

Meanwhile, the NY Times reports the shooting increasingly has member of congress concerned for their own safety.

The killing of Mr. Kirk has intensified already pervasive fears among lawmakers on Capitol Hill about personal safety, even as it has fed the cycle of finger-pointing and partisan warfare in the toxic political discourse often gripping Congress and the country…

After the fatal shooting of Mr. Kirk, many immediately scrapped upcoming outdoor events and said an already untenable security situation had grown even worse.

“People are scared to death in this building,” said Representative Jared Moskowitz, the Florida Democrat who was the target of an assassination plot last year. “Not many of them will say it publicly, but they’re running to the speaker talking about security — and that’s a lot of Republicans. People are scared, really scared.”…

Members of both parties appeared visibly shaken as Mr. Trump’s announcement on Truth Social that Mr. Kirk had died flashed across their phone screens.

Representative Steve Scalise, the Louisiana Republican who was shot by a gunman in 2017, sat alone and in silence for several minutes processing the news.

“It was hard to focus,” he told CBS News on Thursday morning…

By Thursday, the implications of the assassination were sinking in. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Democrat of New York, said on Thursday that she was rescheduling a planned rally in North Carolina because of the shooting, in part out of respect for Mr. Kirk but also because she did not feel safe attending.

A lot of people on the right really dislike AOC (and the rest of the squad) but I don’t know of anyone on the right who wants to see her physically harmed. Humiliated in public? Yes, lots of Republicans would openly celebrate that. But injured? No. I hope we never see anything like that.

Speaking of celebrations, some well known people on the right have been making an effort to punish those who celebrated Kirk’s murder. Wired seems thrilled at having some way to make Republicans look like the bad guys in this situation.

The people posting the identifying information include Chaya Raichik, who runs the hugely influential, hate-filled LibsofTikTok account on X, Trump-whisperer Laura Loomer, and former Proud Boy leader Enrique Tarrio.

A central hub of this activity is a website called Charlie’s Murderers, which was registered in the early evening on the day Kirk was shot and is revealing certain personal information, such as social media usernames and email addresses, of individuals the operators believe were celebrating the horrific murder.

Eventually, they get around to mentioning some of the comments made by this people and some of it really is ugly.

Loomer followed through on her threat in at least one instance, targeting a woman in Arizona who she claimed worked at a kids’ club in a fitness center. Loomer posted a screenshot of the woman’s Instagram account where she wrote: “Today’s a good day y’all” under a news story about Kirk’s death.

“I hope this dumb b***h is fired,” Loomer wrote, alongside a video showing her calling the woman’s place of employment and speaking to her manager…

While Loomer was hoping to get someone fired, it appears Raichik succeeded.

Shortly after she highlighted that the assistant dean at the office of Student Care and Conduct at Middle Tennessee State University wrote on her Facebook page that she had “zero sympathy” for Kirk, the woman was fired.

I’m not a fan of this because it’s just cancel culture. Punishing people IRL for dumb things they say online is awfully close to the kind of thing we’re seeing in the UK right now where online commentary is now an arrestable offense and there are plenty of people on the left happy to rat you out and, if possible, ruin your life. We don’t need that here.

Believe me, I understand the impulse because there really are an overwhelming number of hateful, stupid people out there who don’t seem at all phased by political assassination so long as the victim said something they dislike about trans people or gun control.

What would really help settle things down is an arrest. But despite reports that a press conference was canceled earlier because of rapid developments in the case, I don’t see much movement. We’re still looking at photos of someone who may or may not be our suspect, just as we were this morning. Hopefully that will change soon. The sooner the better.

Update: Kash Patel is about to hold a press conference with updates. As I write this it hasn’t started yet but it should be any moment.
