Senegal in FIFA World Cup 2002 followed what was started by Cameroon in the 1990 FIFA World Cup, Roger Lemerre’s players won their first group match against the defending champions France by a margin of 1-0. The Lions of Teranga then played a draw against two times FIFA World Cup champions Uruguay in group stage fixture. The West African nation went on to win their round of 16 fixture against Sweden by a scoreline of 2-1 but was defeated in the quarterfinals by Turkey.
Ghana in FIFA World Cup 2010 was on the verge of becoming the first African nation to reach the semifinals of the FIFA World Cup but was stopped by what is famously called Luis Suarez’s handball. Asamoah Gyan-led side won against the four-time champions Germany in a group stage match of FIFA World Cup 2010. The Black Stars in the quarter-finals were defeated by Uruguay in penalties after the match was tied on full time with a goal score of 1-1. The 37-year-old Asamoah Gyan missed the penalty that was awarded in the 21st minute.
