Tributes are pouring in after the death of Britain’s longest-reigning monarch. Queen Elizabeth ll sat on the throne for 70 years. She died on Thursday at the age of 96.
Many people gathered in front of Buckingham Palace in London on Friday and expressed their shock.
The Queen is succeeded by her eldest son, now King Charles III. Britain’s coins will change and so will the national anthem.
It will be “God Save the King,” instead of “God Save the Queen.” Queen Elizabeth II was the monarch for seven decades and was often called Britain’s “rock”.
A state funeral will be held at London’s Westminster Abbey most likely within the next two weeks. Before that, the Queen will lie in state for four days so mourners can pay their respects.
Japan’s Emperor Naruhito has issued a statement conveying his sorrow and heartfelt condolences.
He expressed respect for the Queen’s legacy and spoke of his gratitude for the kindness she showed when he studied at Oxford University and on subsequent visits to the UK.
