The New Zealand College of Public
Health Medicine (NZCPHM) welcomes the announcement that
the Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield has made
directions under the Health Act to 14 local authorities to
add fluoride to some or all of their water supplies.
Increasing the proportion of people in New Zealand receiving
fluoridated water is an important practical step in
improving dental health in these
communities.
Community water fluoridation is an
important public health measure to maintain oral health and
prevent tooth decay. The benefits of community water
fluoridation are most pronounced for those at higher risk of
poor oral health, with the greatest benefit for children
living in the most socioeconomically deprived
area.
Community water fluoridation is supported by
many eminent national and international health
organisations.
