An 80-year-old man is still recovering from injuries at a hospital after an Oct. 23 carjacking outside Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, with the man accused facing a Nov. 12 court date.
Police said Kyle Sears was arrested in Verona in Grundy County after an arrest warrant was issued. Court records show Sears has an extensive background, including pending arrest warrants for offenses including delivery of a controlled substance. Police said he was taken into custody Oct. 25.
A GoFundMe page established for the victim, Andy Horwath, he is being treated at Loyola University Medical Center, with injuries to his hip and leg.
Police said Horwath was run over by his own vehicle and was being discharged from Silver Cross when Sears climbed into the driver’s side seat and drove off, pushing Horwath out of the passenger side seat.
An arrest warrant for Sears, 35, included charges of aggravated vehicular hijacking, vehicular invasion and possession of a stolen motor vehicle.
Police said it happened at about 6 p.m. Oct. 23 as Horwath was leaving Silver Cross and being helped into the passenger side seat of his minivan.
Police say Sears climbed into the driver’s seat and began to pull away, with the Horwath partly in his seat before Sears pushed him out and he was hit by the van.
The van was later found in Joliet. Police said Sears’ last known address was in Shorewood but he was believed to be homeless.
