The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has launched an investigation into a viral video showing a female traveller destroying a Nigerian Standard Passport at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos State.
The viral video, posted by Amasowomwan Courage, shows the woman tearing her husband’s international passport.
The couple, who were travelling with their children, were engaged in a dispute, but the cause of their misunderstanding remains unclear.
In the video, she can be heard telling her husband, “This is Nigeria,” as he attempts to collect the shredded document.
“Na me tear am. Bring my children out for me. If you want to sleep there, you sleep there. Come and go. This is Nigeria. Na here you dey.”
NIS spokesperson, Kenneth Udo, who confirmed this in a statement on Monday in Abuja, said that the individual had been identified and invited for further investigation.
“NIS has launched a formal investigation following the circulation of a video on social media showing a female traveller destroying a Nigerian Standard Passport at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos. The individual has been identified and invited for further investigation,” Udo said.
According to Udo, if the allegations are substantiated, the individual’s actions breached the provisions of Section 10(b) of the Immigration Act 2015 (as amended), with corresponding penalties outlined under Section 10(h) of the same Act.
The Guardian reports that violating this section of the law is a serious offense, punishable by up to 10 years imprisonment and/or a fine.
Udo, however, reiterated the commitment of the Service to upholding the provisions of the Immigration Act in the interest of national security and preserving the dignity and integrity of the nation’s legal instruments.
