Njugana’s Place – a famous Nyama Choma joint along Waiyaki Way Westlands – has rolled down its curtains after 50 years of service.
The restaurant used to serve thousands of Kenyans in the city and those who travelled along the busy highway.
Owned by the late Joseph Njuguna Macharia’s family, the business shut down in January 2023, leaving Kenyans with a lot of questions
Most Kenyans responding to the news opined that it could be because of bad economic times and poor management, while others thought it was the effect of the Nairobi Expressway Expansion.
Kenyan’s reaction to Njuguna’s closure
Former MP Kabando wa Kabando recounted the generation of service offered at the old colonial restaurant.

“NJUGUNAS was home for generations without count. Someone should pen a book on it,” read Kabando’s retweet in part.
@cicada254 responded;
“This is a huge loss. There is now only one business that still stands the test of time in this city.”

“It is unfortunate that the siblings are unable to move businesses once the patriarchs die, we used to eat very good meat with my friend Hon Muiruri regularly.”
@Shamba_Boy1 wrote;
“I loved, Mutura at this place, I thought with the closure of Maxland restaurant that was at Shell Maiga Mimairu road, Njugunas will blossom. It is sad to see such a huge business closing down with all the employment it had created.”
@JafarMwinyihija opined;
“Time is transient. Road expansion thinned their customers due to the lack of parking space. Dust was also an issue. That place was always a buzz, trust me.”

Njuguna’s Place history
The restaurant was founded in a small house built during the colonial period, when the road was called Salisbury Way.
It was meant to serve as a canteen for the Westlands community and the military camp.
