In early July, HMD Global announced the Nokia G42; a very affordable and fixable device. At an RRP of AU$449.00, it’s pretty cheap, and you’d be excused for assuming it was a consumable device. Part of the marketability of this particular device is the QuickFix approach.
Common issues that users face are broken screens, damaged charging ports and aging batteries. All three of these are replaceable at home, simply buy the kit from ifixit.com.
The fun from today’s announcement is that if you’ve got an old phone due for retirement (aka. e-waste recycling), you may be eligible to win a four day holiday.
HMD Global has also recently launched its ‘Recycle To Win Competition’, teaming up with Clean Up Australia, Freely, Mobile Muster and Wander to reward Australian consumers who recycle their old mobile device through Mobile Muster. By recycling their phone, users go into the draw to a 4-day holiday in Kangaroo Island (SA) or Scenic Rim (QLD).
With an approach like this, HMD Global are using the Nokia brand to lead the way in the sustainability and repairability of devices without the high costs associated with using professional repair shops.
