North Korea has announced there was no new “fever cases” reported in the country on Friday.
North Korea’s ruling party newspaper Rodong Sinmun reported in its Saturday edition that there were no new fever cases on Friday, citing an announcement by health authorities. Fever cases are believed to refer to coronavirus infections.
This is the first time no new cases have been reported in the country since May 12, when Pyongyang made its first announcement of apparent coronavirus cases within the country.
Statistics compiled by the North show the daily tally of fever cases has been on a downtrend after peaking in the middle of May with more than 390,000 infections.
Rodong Sinmun said the unity of the nation toward a victory in the battle against the epidemic is being demonstrated in a powerful manner.
Observers say the North Korean leadership may soon declare “a victory” over the coronavirus in a bid to enhance the authority of leader Kim Jong Un.
However, experts have questioned the credibility of the North Korean data. They have pointed out that asymptomatic cases are not included in the country’s tallies and fatality rates are unusually low, compared with other countries.
Furthermore, vaccinations have made little progress in the North, pointing to the possibility of a resurgence in infections.
