EDDYVILLE, Ky. — The National Weather Service provided additional details Tuesday about the tornado that originated around 7 p.m. Sunday in Eddyville and resulted in one dead.
According to a survey summary provided by NWS, the tornado formed in Eddyville, and the Caldwell and Lyon County line sustained damage consistent with an EF-2 tornado.
The tornado continued into western Caldwell County, north of Princeton, and reached its peak width of 700 yards. Several mobile homes and wood and brick-framed structures were destroyed in the area. It moved east and approached western Hopkins County, north of Interstate 69, and destroyed more mobile homes and at least one permanent residence.
North of Morton’s Gap, it destroyed two other mobile homes and flipped a vehicle. It ended about 9:15 p.m. in Morton’s Gap. The NWS noted widespread tree damage along the tornado’s path, and said 46 buildings were destroyed or sustained major damage.
In addition to the one fatality, 21 injuries were reported as a result of the storm. The tornado’s estimated peak wind speed was 160 miles per hour. The total length of its path was 35.49 miles.
The assessment gave the tornado an EF-3 rating, but was still considered preliminary Tuesday.
