Berlin (dpa) – Ahead of the G20 summit in India, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz has called for partnerships on an equal footing with the emerging countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America. “It’s an obligation on our part – and a hell of a big one, I might say,” he said in an interview with Deutschlandfunk radio published on Saturday. Scholz said that a lot of Western states had a particular responsibility towards the countries on these continents due to their colonial past. Now was the moment “to put everything we have into these partnerships to put them on an equal footing”, said Scholz. Germany once had colonies in Africa and Asia, too.
The heads of state and government of leading economic powers will meet in the Indian capital New Delhi for the two-day G20 summit next Saturday. Since the beginning of his term in office, Scholz has endeavoured to deepen relations with the countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America – not least so as to prevent these continents from falling under the influence of China and Russia. Last year, Scholz invited India, Indonesia, South Africa, Senegal and Argentina to the G7 summit in Elmau, Bavaria. He also advocates for the inclusion of the African Union in the G20.
