Orlando Pirates set to offload African star after just five games. Let’s find out why.
Pirates are reportedly preparing to part ways with Gilberto after the Angolan international failed to make a significant impact in the Betway Premiership. Since joining the Soweto giants at the start of the season, the 24-year-old has struggled to cement his place in the squad.
During the recent January transfer window, Pirates loaned Gilberto back to his former club, Petro de Luanda, for the remainder of the season. Now, the club appears ready to make the separation permanent.
Lack of game time and rising competition
Gilberto managed just five league appearances for the Buccaneers, mostly coming off the bench. He also played in seven domestic cup and CAF Champions League matches but only started twice across all competitions. Despite shining at Petro de Luanda and making a mark in last year’s Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, he has failed to replicate that form in South Africa.
His struggles have been further compounded by the rise of youngster Mohau Nkota, who has earned a spot in José Riveiro’s plans. With Nkota’s emergence, Pirates’ management is now open to selling Gilberto.
Pirates ready to sell as Petro shows Interest
Sources close to the club suggest that a permanent move is now on the table.
“A move for Gilberto is definitely on the table,” a source revealed. “With Mohau Nkota stepping up, Pirates are open to selling, and Petro sees him as a key addition to their squad.”
Despite having two years left on his contract, Gilberto may not return to Orlando Pirates next season. Petro de Luanda has reportedly expressed interest in securing his services on a full-time basis, bringing him back to the Girabola league.
Was five games enough to judge?
The big question remains: Did Gilberto get a fair chance to prove himself at Orlando Pirates? Five league appearances, most as a substitute, might not have been enough for the foreign attacker to adapt and showcase his true potential. Adding to this Monnapule Saleng is also not training, so not available.
As discussions unfold, it seems likely that Gilberto’s brief stint with the Buccaneers is coming to an end. Whether he will revive his career back in Angola or seek another opportunity elsewhere remains to be seen.
