Brussels (dpa) – At a summit meeting in Brussels, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and the other European Union leaders have called for humanitarian corridors and pauses in the shelling to allow aid to be delivered safely to the Gaza Strip. Their aim is to alleviate the suffering of the civilian population. The deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza is a cause for gravest concern, reads a summit declaration on the Middle East conflict.
In the conflict between the Islamist Hamas group and Israel, the declaration calls for rapid, safe and unhindered humanitarian access for aid. The heads of state and government also voiced support for an international peace conference for the Middle East to be held in the near future.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz warned against a widening of the conflict and reasserted Germany’s support for Israel. He used very clear language to counter fears that Israel could violate international law in its actions against Hamas. “Israel is a democratic state guided by very humanitarian principles,” the chancellor said. “And so we can be certain that the Israeli army will respect the rules that arise from international law in everything it does. I have no doubt about that.”
