A person has been taken to Christchurch Hospital after being hit by a car along State Highway 1 in Kaikōura on Sunday evening.
Emergency services were alerted to the single-vehicle crash at 7.20pm, just north of Hapuku, a police spokesperson said.
The crash involved a vehicle and pedestrian, and SH1 was closed while police staff examined the scene, the spokesperson said.
“The pedestrian, who had moderate injuries, was taken to Christchurch Hospital.”
The road was reopened at 9.45pm.
A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesperson said two crews from Kaikōura were sent to the scene, where they assisted police and ambulance officers.
Crews assisted with setting up a landing pad for a helicopter before leaving the scene at 9.30pm.
Hato Hone St John responded with one helicopter, one ambulance and a Prime team of specially trained rural medical practitioners.
A spokesperson said one patient was assessed at the scene and airlifted to hospital in a serious condition.
