Wiesbaden (dpa/d.de) – According to a study, men and women of the so-called baby boomer cohorts remain in employment for significantly longer on average than previous generations. Working life is now considerably longer, especially for people born after 1946. Baby boomers are those who belong to cohorts in which there was a particularly high birth rate; in Germany the term refers to people born between 1955 and 1969. The study found that men born in 1955 worked on average two years longer than men born in 1941, according to the Federal Institute for Population Research (BIB) in Wiesbaden. Women also work for two years longer on average.
According to the authors of the study, the most significant extension of working life applies to skilled workers and highly skilled workers, while it applies least among those with a lower level of education and lower-skilled professions. In addition to political reforms in the labour market and pensions, they regard the baby boomers’ generally higher level of education as the cause. What is more, people are now ageing more healthily than it was the case in previous generations.
