Ramstein (dpa) – Leopard tanks from Germany that have been damaged in the Ukraine war are to be repaired in Poland in future and thus return to the front line more quickly. On the sidelines of the meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group at the Ramstein US military base, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius agreed with his counterparts from Warsaw and Kyiv to set up a repair centre. He said that a fund solution had been agreed to “fairly share” the costs of 150 to 200 million euros per year.
US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin announced that the USA would be sending Abrams tanks to Germany in the coming weeks to train Ukrainian soldiers in their use. The USA had promised Ukraine in January that 31 Abrams battle tanks would be supplied.
The US secretary of defense had invited the international Ukraine Defense Contact Group for the coordination of military support for Ukraine to Ramstein for the fourth time since the war began in February 2022. Representatives of more than 50 countries attended the conference on the 422nd day of the Russian war of aggression – including Ukrainian Defence Minister Oleksiy Reznikov and Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
