The boys, aged nine and 10, were killed after a Subaru WRX slammed into a tree on The Grand Parade in Monterey about 9.50pm following the single-vehicle crash.
They were treated at the scene by paramedics and were taken to Sydney Children’s Hospital, where they died.
A nine-year-old girl, the 33-year-old driver’s daughter, is in the children’s hospital with minor injuries.
Inspector Jason Hogan said police would be investigating if the car was street racing before the crash.
“He (the driver) has got some serious injuries relating to the crash and on medical advice, we will be looking to interview and charge him at a later time,” Hogan said.
He said crash investigators would work to establish the speed of the car before the crash, and will also speak to the surviving girl about the incident.
“She (the young girl) is stable in hospital and we will be speaking to her as soon as we can.”
“It is a particularly nasty crash where two innocent young children have lost their lives.
“We will be in constant contact with all members of the family to ensure their ongoing welfare and they are kept abreast of the rest of our investigation as it unfolds.”
He said they were seeking assistance from the public to identify a grey sedan that was travelling in the other lane at the time of the crash.
“We’d like to speak to the driver of the vehicle to establish what they saw and any actions that may or may not have been undertaken.”
