Job description
The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) is seeking a Postdoctoral Associate to support the NOAA Global Monitoring Laboratory’s (GML) Technology Transfer, Engineering and Applications (TTEA) AirCore Program. The AirCore Program is part of the larger NOAA Global Greenhouse Gas Reference Network (GGGRN), an international measurement effort that includes regular discrete sampling from the NOAA/GML baseline observatories and cooperative fixed sites, as well as mobile airborne and ship-based platforms. The TTEA AirCore Program is focused on long-term monitoring of greenhouse and trace gases from the surface to the stratosphere – via balloons and small UAS – for detecting trends and potential changes in atmospheric composition and dynamics due to climate change, as well as for evaluating satellite retrievals and carbon model output. This position will support NOAA/GML/TTEA efforts within NOAA’s Earth Radiation Budget Initiative in conducting balloon-borne observations of baseline upper tropospheric/lower stratospheric composition.
This is a one-year position with the possibility of up to two additional years of extension based on performance and the availability of funding.
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
- Assist in the acquisition, analysis and quality control of measurements from balloon-based AirCore samples.
- Interpret global in situ data and/or model output to better understand stratospheric composition and dynamics in a changing climate.
- Assist with improving the techniques, procedures, and instrumentation used in the GGGRN, in particular with in situ vertical measurements of atmospheric CO2, CH4, CO, N2O, SF6, CFCs, Halons, and other trace gases.
- Participate in the development of new instrumentation and measurement techniques for the AirCore balloon borne high-altitude sampling system.
- Implement field work or campaigns on behalf of TTEA AirCore Program.
- Publish papers in peer-reviewed journals and present results at scientific conferences.
What We Require
- Ph.D. in atmospheric physics or chemistry, oceanography, or a related field.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience making high-accuracy, high precision measurements of trace gases, data QA/QC and archival with a measurement background that includes techniques such as gas chromatography and/or spectrometry. Experience completed during or as part of the Ph.D. program is acceptable.
What You Will Need
- Proficiency in computer programming in MATLAB, Python or R.
- Ability to communicate proficiently in the English language both orally and in writing within a professional scientific environment.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret atmospheric measurements and communicate results to the scientific community via peer-reviewed publications and presentations at scientific meetings.
- Basic understanding of atmospheric dynamics.
- Ability to participate in low physical activity like walking for field work; able to lift and carry 20 pounds.
- Ability to participate in both foreign and domestic travel up to 15% of the year, on average, with the ability to obtain a visa for field work in South America, Central America and/or Europe.
What We Would Like You to Have
We invite applicants to apply even if they do not have the preferred skills and experience outlined in this section. If you meet the minimum qualifications and have passion for the work, you are encouraged to apply. We encourage on-the-job training for any additional skills or knowledge that become relevant to the position.
- Demonstrated ability to successfully conduct work in a collaborative environment with a diverse group of scientists
- Experience with conducting field measurements
- Meticulous work ethic, and keen interest in laboratory studies and accurate analyses of air samples
