Prime Minister Scott Morrison has defended the temporary cut of fuel excise, saying there wasn’t going to be any real difference to the petrol prices by making “marginal changes”.
“What has happened over months now as we’ve seen the invasion of Ukraine take hold, and we’ve seen the impact of that on petrol prices,” Mr Morrison said at a media conference on Tuesday.
“They were getting up over $2.20, up to $2.30, and now we see them at these levels because of the intervention we’ve made.”
Political Editor Andrew Clennell labelled the petrol price reduction as a “clever political move” by the prime minister.
“There’s no doubt there’s a much bigger psychological field from driving past those petrol signs than there is even from a tax cut,” Mr Clennell said.
