For three decades, Vanity Fair has celebrated excellence in film on Oscar night, and this year that support will be more vital than ever. This winter’s wildfires have been devastating for Los Angeles, and the recovery efforts have only just begun. The destruction and loss, the distress and anxiety brought on by evacuation warnings, power outages, and fear for one’s family’s safety—it is so much to bear.
We know from experience that awards season and all its attendant events, from the Golden Globes to the Academy Awards, are extremely important to the economic health and sustainability of Los Angeles and the Hollywood community. They impact not just actors, directors, and screenwriters, but also all of the craftspeople and industry-adjacent workers whose labor helps make the city a world-class producer of entertainment.
This year, in conjunction with our Oscar-week events, Vanity Fair will support the efforts of two local organizations helping Angelenos: the Motion Picture & Television Fund and Baby2Baby. MPTF is actively offering emergency financial assistance, supportive counseling, and resource navigation to members of the entertainment industry impacted by the Southern California wildfires. Its mission aligns with our editorial focus, and we’ve been proud to partner with the organization during times of crisis for the industry, like the COVID-19 pandemic. Baby2Baby is a national nonprofit headquartered in Los Angeles that has already distributed over 7 million emergency supplies including diapers, food, formula, water, clothing, blankets, and hygiene products to children and families impacted by the LA fires. They are working with 470 partner organizations in LA County spanning schools, evacuation shelters, and resource centers to fulfill requests for essential items and will continue to do so for months and years to come.
We’re ever grateful to you, our audience, for following our coverage of Hollywood—especially during the challenges of the past few years, from COVID shutdowns to debilitating strikes. And we’re glad that our own writers, reporters, producers, and editors based in LA have made it safely through these difficult few weeks. Part of our goal this season will be to amplify the city’s efforts to recover and rebuild after the fires, both through our reporting and through our presence at a moment when all eyes are on Los Angeles. Thank you for helping us accomplish that. Should you be moved to pitch in, please visit MPTF or Baby2Baby directly, or any number of the other charities doing good work in Los Angeles.
With thanks,
Radhika Jones
