Manchester United’s second goal in Sunday’s 2-0 League Cup final win over Newcastle United has been belatedly credited to Marcus Rashford.
Initially, the goal, which took a deflection off a Magpies defender, was given as an own goal.
But on Monday, the goal was switched to Rashford, who is in the form of his life, giving the England striker three reasons to celebrate.
Not only did it settle a hard-fought final against Newcastle at Wembley, it means that he finished as the competition’s top scorer, with six goals, and also scored in every possible round.
Six minutes after Casemiro had opened the scoring for United, Rashford was through on goal again and his shot took a deflection off Sven Botman before looping over goalkeeper Loris Karius.
The unfortunate Botman had an own goal put against his name at the time, but by Monday competition officials had changed their minds.
“Manchester United’s second goal in the Carabao Cup Final officially went to Marcus Rashford!
“It means he finishes the competition as top scorer with six goals, having scored in every round,” organisers said.
Rashford, 25, has now scored 25 goals for United this season, 17 of which have come after the World Cup break.
But Sunday’s was special as it delivered the Old Trafford club their first trophy since 2017, when they won the Europa League.
“A moment you dream of all your life! Scoring for the club, you support in a cup final. That one is for the fans,” Rashford wrote on Twitter.
United now switch their focus to the FA Cup. They host West Ham United on Wednesday in one of the ties of the fifth round.
