Westpac Chief Economist Bill Evans says a “recession” is not expected to hit Australia amid fears the Reserve Bank will continue raising rates this year.
“We expect them to rase the cash rate by 25 basis points in February, and then another one in March and we actually think there’ll have to be a final hike in May,” Mr Evans told Sky News Australia.
“That’s been our view for a very, very long time and even with those numbers we don’t expect to see a recession.
“A lot of this scare-mongering we’re seeing – I don’t think that’s really justified in terms of the outlook.”
