Berlin (dpa) – At the end of 2023, Germany had more than 28,000 wind farms with a combined capacity of around 61 gigawatts (GW). According to industry sources, onshore wind power was the most important source of energy in Germany last year, accounting for 26.5 percent of electricity generated. By 2030, at least 80 percent of the electricity consumed in Germany is to be produced from renewable energies. To this end, the Renewable Energy Sources Act provides for a 10 GW annual expansion of onshore wind power capacity.
According to the Federal Economics Ministry, bids for tenders for new onshore wind turbines have reached a record high. Awards from the first three tender rounds in 2024 are likely to significantly exceed 7 GW of capacity, reports German Economics Minister Robert Habeck. “That would be an increase of more than 60 percent compared to last year.” The approval procedures have been accelerated and simplified over the past two years, he added.
