Schwangau (dpa) – Renovation work at the world-famous Neuschwanstein Castle in southern Germany is almost complete. It has been ongoing since 1994. The Free State of Bavaria spent 40 million euros on the project, including 20 million over the past seven year on the refurbishment of the state rooms alone. According to the Bavarian Ministry of Finance, the project has remained almost within the budget as originally planned.
“This renovation work has been a challenge since it was carried out while tourist visits continued as usual,” said Bavaria’s Minister of Finance Albert Füracker at the presentation of the final outcome in the fairytale castle in Schwangau in the Allgäu region. The first extensive renovation to have been done in the castle ever since it was built around 150 years ago, the work became necessary due to the Alpine climate and also the wear and tear caused by the constant stream of visitors. 850,000 people visited the monument in 2023 alone, and it has also been proposed as a future UNESCO World Heritage Site.
