Heidelberg (d.de) – For the first time, researchers have succeeded in extracting “ink” for 3D laser printers from microalgae. This was announced by Heidelberg University, which employs the international team of researchers led by Professor Eva Blasco. The substance could be used as the basis for medical implants. The materials are also environmentally friendly, stresses Blasco. Thanks to their high proportion of lipids and photoactive pigments, microalgae such as the diatom Odontella aurita and the green alga Tetraselmis striata are especially suitable as “biofactories” for producing sustainable materials for 3D laser printing.
