Former Mamelodi Sundowns and current Wydad Athletic coach Rulani Mokwena has revealed which Premier Soccer League(PSL) team offered him a coaching role.
The 37-year-old coach parted ways with Sundowns after a decade at the club. According to various reports, Mokwena left following a broken working relationship between him and Downs’sporting director Flemming Berg. The Brazilians have since appointed Manqoba Mngqithi as head coach with Steve Komphela serving as his assistant.
Just a few days after leaving Sundowns, Rulani Mokwena was linked with a move to Wydad. The rumours turned out to be true and last week the former Downs mentor was announced as the new Wydad coach.
Speaking on the Sports Night Amplified with Andile Ncube, Mokwena revealed that PSL side offered him a coaching role.
Rulani Mokwena chose Wydad over Richards Bay
“Was a good offer from Richards Bay but I just couldn’t stay in South Africa and go up against Sundowns as a coach.”
“The bond I have with Sundowns’ players would have made it difficult for me to be on the opposite bench, that is one of the reasons I preferred to leave South Africa,” he said.
Rulani Mokwena admitted that the Wydad Casablanca deal happened so soon just when he was just trying to heal from his Downs exit.
“The deal between me and Wydad happened very fast and I was humbled when that new Chairman and board sold the vision to me,” he said.
Rulani Mokwena’s task at Wydad will be harder as the club seeks to win the Botola Pro League having finished sixth last season.
Will Rulani last in Morocco?
