While the demand for home ownership is believed to “start improving” after record population growth, a resilient economy, low unemployment and declining mortgage rates in the second half of 2023, the same can’t be said for rentals.

Rent prices across the GTA have been outrageous, particularly for what you get, whether it’s a bed in the middle of a kitchen, bunk beds, or people even living in cars in driveways.

The latest is a shared studio basement apartment in Scarborough, which was recently listed on Kijiji for $1,000 — per tenant.
“A new walkout spacious studio in a custom build house,” reads the ad that was also shared on Reddit’s Slumlords Canada page.
“Studio has a lawn view which makes it very bright,” it continued. “Private washroom, kitchenette and separate entrance with free parking.”
It sounds good and looks decent and not like some of the other dungeon-like spaces that have been marketed.
But the size of studios or bachelor apartments are ideal for one or two people, and that’s not want the landlord is looking for.

Many questioned in the comments section about the all-female requirements, though one person tried to give the homeowner the benefit of the doubt by saying that four girls would create less havoc than a group of guys.
However, others went to a more salacious place.
“It could be that… but it’s probably just some creep with a few cameras,” one wrote.
Another joked, “Do the girls get a cut of the Webcam cash?”
Others simply didn’t get the logistics of cramming more than two people into the space.

“How the f*** would a studio be for 3-4 people??,” one person asked. “Also, pretty sure you don’t charge rent per person.”
The listing mentions that a TV, WiFi, a microwave, fridge, utensils, kitchenware and essentials for cooking come with the package, but each tenant is required to pay $1,000 monthly.
The ad also boasted about its proximity to major bus stops, grocery stores, medical centres, restaurants, and major attractions.
But people still couldn’t get over the cost.
“I’m sorry but why wouldn’t they just rent a house or downtown condominium for this price…” one Redditor suggested.
Another user asked, “If it’s just an open room, where are the 4 beds?,” to which someone cheekily replied, “Whoever said 4 beds?”
