Brussels (dpa) – EU heads of state and government met in Brussels for their last regular summit before the summer break. The agenda for the two-day meeting includes discussions on additional support for Ukraine, the situation in Russia and dealing with illegal migration across the Mediterranean. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy of Ukraine is expected to join the meeting via video link for some time on Thursday afternoon. A meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg is planned to take place before the official opening of the summit.
Ahead of the summit, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz welcomed President Dimitar Kovacevski of North Macedonia to Berlin, where Scholz pledged further support for the EU accession process. “Germany takes the prospects of EU membership for Western Balkans states very seriously,” said Scholz. He assured Kovacevski that the EU would not impose new conditions on the accession process.
