Berlin (dpa) – Following Azerbaijan’s conquest of the Nagorno-Karabakh region, whose population is mainly Armenian, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz held a telephone call with the Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. The two leaders discussed the situation Nagorno-Karabakh and need for urgent supplies of humanitarian aid for the people there, according to Government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit.
During the call, the Federal Chancellor condemned the use of military force and supported a negotiated solution. Scholz stressed that the rights and safety of the population of Nagorno-Karabakh must be protected if a long-term settlement to the conflict is to be found. The Federal Chancellor also said that it was now up to Azerbaijan to provide humanitarian aid and guarantee the safety of people in Nagorno-Karabakh in a transparent way. He also stressed the need to respect Armenia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The Nagorno-Karabakh region lies within Azerbaijani territory, but the majority of the population are Armenians. It has been the focus of a long-running conflict between the two former Soviet republics. Last Tuesday Azerbaijan’s authoritarian government commenced military operations to seize the region. The Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh surrendered just one day later.
