Berlin (d.de) – During a visit to Germany by the new Romanian Prime Minister Ion-Marcel Ciolacu, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz drew attention to the partnership between the two countries and thanked Romania for its solidarity with Ukraine. “Romania and Germany are trusted allies, close partners, and good friends,” Scholz said.
The Federal Chancellor thanked Romania for its resolute response to Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. He praised the important contribution Romania had made by taking in countless refugees from Ukraine, supporting international aid deliveries to Ukraine and facilitating grain exports through the European Solidarity Lanes.
Scholz pledged to help Romania quickly become a full member of the Schengen Area. He also assured Ciolacu that Germany would help Romania become a full member of the Schengen Area this year. Romania had made “great efforts” towards joining the zone, and he said Germany had a duty to acknowledge them. The Schengen Area allows people from European member states to travel between countries without border checks. It is named after the village of Schengen in Luxembourg where the Schengen Agreement was signed in 1985.
