Paris (dpa) – Germany, France and Poland discuss long-term security guarantees for Ukraine. Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz met French President Emmanuel Macron and Polish Head of State Andrzej Duda in Paris. Scholz assured Ukraine of further support and welcomed the debate on security guarantees.
At present, said Scholz, efforts were mainly directed at supporting Ukraine in its defensive struggle against Russia. “We’ll continue to do this for as long as necessary – that’s something we’re prepared for.” But it still made sense to engage in intense debate on security guarantees, said the Chancellor. “We’ll carry on these in-depth talks until we arrive at an outcome we all agree on. But one thing is clear: this is something we definitely need, and it has to be very concrete.”
The tripartite meetings between Germany, France and Poland are called the “Weimar Triangle”. It is a discussion forum that was established in August 1991 by the then Foreign Ministers Hans-Dietrich Genscher, Roland Dumas and Krzysztof Skubiszewski in Weimar, Thuringia. Its main purpose was initially to enable Poland and other Eastern European states to engage more closely with the European Union and NATO.
