The raging feud between Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, and his deputy, Philip Shaibu, took a new dimension, yesterday, following the deputy governor’s withdrawal of the suit against the governor over alleged impeachment plans.
The deputy governor, in a letter, captioned, ‘Re: Suit No.FHC/ABJ/CS/1027/2023,’ said he has instructed and authorised his solicitors to withdraw the suit forthwith, arising from a series of meetings with the governor by well-meaning Edolites and Nigerians in ensuring peace and unity in the state.
The letter, sighted by The Guardian, expressed appreciation to leaders of People Democratic Party (PDP) and other stakeholders for the timely intervention to end the face-off.
Shaibu said the intervention of stakeholders, including party leaders, traditional rulers and the Archbishop of Benin Archdiocese, Most Rev. Dr. Augustine Akubeze, on the issues, informed his decision to withdraw the suit in the interest of peace and unity in the state.
“Arising from series of meetings, held with me and also with the governor by well-meaning Edolites and Nigerians, including party leaders, traditional rulers and the Archbishop of Benin Archdiocese, Most Rev. Dr. Augustine Akubeze, on the issues that led to my going to court, and with due respect to these eminent personalities and leaders whose persuasions and persons I cannot ignore, I, Philip Shaibu, have authorised and instructed my solicitors to withdraw the suit forthwith.”
Recall that Obaseki had earlier denied knowledge of any plan to impeach his deputy, expressing shock at the move by his deputy to drag him to court.
The governor claimed that the move by Shaibu to seek a court order to stop his purported impeachment was preemptive ahead of his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
