Berlin (d.de) – On World Refugee Day, Germany’s Development Minister Svenja Schulze has called for solidarity with the 120 million refugees worldwide. “In my conversations with refugees, one thing has particularly stood out: nobody flees voluntarily, and most refugees want nothing more than to be able to return home. They all deserve protection and the full solidarity of the international community,” said Schulze.
Along with numerous non-governmental organisations, the Development Ministry is seeking to raise the visibility of refugees and their stories visible on World Refugee Day by means of the campaign #1of120million. The campaign also reflected the high level of solidarity with refugees in German civil society, said Schulze. “This great dedication and commitment to refugees is humanity in action.”
According to the United Nations Refugee Agency, UNHCR, there are 120 million refugees worldwide – 1.5 percent of the world’s population. Most refugees remain in their country of origin. The Development Ministry is also running a special initiative to support refugees and their host countries. Since 2014, this has involved implementation of more than 330 projects in 78 countries and has already provided support for some 40 million people.
