Parts of southern Alberta are in store for an intense bout of winter weather Saturday, as a snow squall is expected to rapidly reduce visibility to near zero in some areas.
Environment Canada issued a snow squall warning for the areas of Airdrie-Cochrane-Olds-Sundre and Drumheller-Three Hills. Snow squall warnings are issued when brief but intense bursts of heavy snow are expected to create near-zero visibility.
Intense snowfall and gusty winds are projected for those areas and travel is expected to be hazardous due to the reduced visibility.
The City of Calgary is under snow squall watch, but as of 4:30 p.m. an advisory had not been issued.
Earlier in the day Environment Canada said areas around Banff and along Highway 93, from Jasper to Saskatchewan River Crossing and Lake Louise to Saskatchewan River Crossing, could experience reduced visibility.
Near Banff, and in the Kananaskis and Canmore areas, heavy snowfall of up to 25 cm is expected, which should taper off Sunday morning, Environment Canada said.
As of 4:30 p.m. Saturday, there were also weather warnings in effect for the following regions:
- Brooks-Strathmore-Vulcan
- Cypress Hills Provincial Park
- Kananaskis-Canmore
- Medicine Hat-Bow Island-Suffield
