South Africa won the toss and chose to bat in the first encounter of their three-match ODI series against England at the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein on Friday.
While England are preparing to defend their 50-over World Cup crown in India in October, South Africa need to win the series – and then the two-match series against the Netherlands in April – in order to qualify for the tournament.
If they fail, the Proteas will be forced to pre-qualify in a 10-team tournament in Harare in June. South Africa win toss and bat in first ODI
The second and third matches take place in Bloemfontein on Sunday and Kimberley next Wednesday.
