Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali received a heroic welcome at Chippa United for his outstanding performance at the 2023 AFCON. Despite receiving multiple offers from Europe and Saudi Arabia, the Nigerian revealed his willingness to extend his stay at the club for one or two more years.
Nwabali expressed his gratitude towards the club chairman, Chippa Mpengesi, and his desire to continue playing for Chippa United. Rising to prominence while playing for the club, Nwabali’s stellar performances earned him a call-up to the Super Eagles during the 2023 African Cup of Nations, where he played a crucial role in helping Nigeria clinch the silver medal in Cote d’Ivoire.
Chippa United granted their sought-after goalkeeper an extended break after the tournament, and upon his return earlier this week, fans turned out in large numbers to welcome him back.
In an interview with SABC, Nwabali explained his desire to remain at Chippa: “When you play under a chairman who understands you, everything falls into place – confidence grows… Playing under a chairman who prioritizes the comfort of his players motivates you to give your all, whether you’re in or out of the team.”
“To be honest, I sincerely hope to continue playing for one or two more years under his leadership – that’s my heartfelt desire. If he shares the same sentiment, that would be wonderful, but it’s truly my wish because he’s a wonderful person.
“He has shown me kindness, and I would like to reciprocate that. However, if my time with the club comes to an end at the conclusion of this season, I will accept it gracefully. If there are further opportunities for me to continue, then I’ll embrace them wholeheartedly,” he concluded.
Despite his sentiments, Nwabali seems to acknowledge that there may be bigger opportunities awaiting him in his career. Speculation suggests a potential move to Belgian side Union St. Gilloise, with reports also indicating interest from clubs in France and Saudi Arabia.
