Stansted: The beautiful city you can fly to from £27 known as ‘the Christmas Capital of the world’

Many British holidaymakers will have heard of festive cities such as Prague and Berlin, but this city is perhaps one of the most underappreciated in Europe.

Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, is known for being the ‘Christmas capital of the world’ and it’s not hard to see why.

You can fly from London Stansted for around £27 and it will only take less than two hours to get there.

Copenhagen has a magnificent history and offers a wide variety of festive attractions for budding tourists.

Going to the Danish capital during the winter means you can visit the wonderful amusement park Tivoli Gardens.

This iconic tourist landmark serves up a magical winter garden during Christmas, with thousands of fairy lights adorning the trees and gardens.

This is not just your bog-standard winter wonderland, as Tivoli serves up enchanting light projections and you might even experience some snow if you’re lucky.

If the Tivoli Gardens dressed in Christmas doesn’t warm your heart this year, nothing will.

One guest on TripAdvisor said: “The atmosphere is fantastic with the little shops everywhere where you can buy all kinds of christmas stuff and danish design fare, the stalls that sell all kind of foods, drinks and the attractions all around. Absolutely a must in Copenhagen in December.”

A second 5* review said: “Wow, what a sight. Tivoli gardens at Christmas is just magnificent.”

Moving away from the gardens, another Christmas highlight that should not be ignored are the festive lights at hotel d’Angleterre.

Nestled on Kongens Nytorv, this magnificent hotel is given a new theme every year and is decorated with splendid Christmas ornaments to brighten up the facade.

You can’t do Christmas in Copenhagen without visiting a local market, and there are plenty to choose from.

The most popular and also most visited one is the Christmas market at Kongens Nytorv.

This festive market is located next to hotel d’Angleterre and you can drink all the mulled wine your heart desires.

Another choice if you want to avoid the crowds is the Nyhavn Christmas market, which focuses on Danish food and drinks.

Stock up on items such as beer, schnapps, roast pork, leverpostej and lots more – you’ll feel like you’ve done Christmas right.

A city rich in history, a strong food culture and an exceptional gardens makes Copenhagen the perfect Christmas holiday destination.
