Berlin/Paris (dpa) – In a telephone call with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, French President Emmanuel Macron has postponed his planned state visit to Germany. The trip, which was supposed to take place from Sunday until Tuesday, is to be rescheduled as soon as possible, announced the Office of the Federal President in Germany. Macron spoke with Steinmeier on the phone and briefed him on the situation in his country, said a spokesperson for Steinmeier: “President Macron has asked that the planned state visit to Germany be postponed.” Steinmeier regrets the cancellation but completely understands the reasons for it. He is following the developments and hopes “that the violence on the streets can be ended as soon as possible and that social peace can be restored,” said the federal president.
It would have been the first state visit of a French president to Germany in 23 years. The reason for the postponement is the ongoing rioting in France following the killing of a 17-year-old during a police stop-and-search operation on Tuesday near Paris.
