Every week, MobileSyrup outlines some of the most notable movies and TV shows that recently hit Canadian streaming platforms.

Our ‘Streaming in Canada’ column typically focuses on new content from Amazon’s Prime Video, Crave and Netflix, but other services like Apple TV+ and Disney+ will be mentioned when relevant. Premium video-on-demand (PVOD) platforms are also fair game as movies continue to come to digital early.

Finally, we’ll highlight shows or movies that are made by Canadian companies, involve notable Canadian cast or crew and/or are filmed in Canada.

Crave

Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story

This documentary explores the life and career Christopher Reeve, the late actor best known for playing Richard Donner’s Superman, who became a disability activist after a tragic accident.

The film was directed by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui (McQueen) and features interviews with Reeve’s family, friends and fellow actors Jeff Daniels, Whoopi Goldberg and Susan Sarandon and Superman producer Pierre Spengler.

Set in the same time period as The Mandalorian, this series follows four children who go on an adventure to return home with the help of an adult Force user.

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew was created by Jon Watts (Spider-Man: No Way Home) and stars Jude Law (The Talented Mr. Ripley), Ravi Cabot-Conyers (Encanto), Ryan Kiera Armstrong (Anne with an E), Kyriana Kratter (Bunk’d) and Robert Timothy Smith (Dear Santa).

Biggest Heist Ever [Netflix Original]

From Chris Smith (Tiger King) comes this documentary about the strange story of “Bitcoin Bonnie and Clyde,” the perpetrators of the most lucrative heist ever.

A Nonsense Christmas with Sabrina Carpenter [Netflix Original]

Popstar Sabrina Carpenter (“Espresso”) celebrates Christmas with special guests, including fellow singers Chappell Roan (The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess) and Windsor, Ontario’s Shania Twain (Come on Over) and actor Sean Astin (The Lord of the Rings).

The Sticky [Amazon Original]

Genre: Comedy-drama
Runtime: Six episodes (around 30 minutes each)

A Canadian woman finds her farm under threat, leading her to retaliate with a plot to steal millions of dollars of maple syrup.

Inspired by the true of the “Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist,” The Sticky was created by Brian Donovan and Ed Herro (American Housewife) and stars Margo Martindale (Justified), Toronto’s Chris Diamantopoulos (Silicon Valley), Sainte-Marie, Quebec’s Guillaume Cyr (Louis Cyr) and Jamie Lee Curtis (Halloween). It’s also worth noting that the series was filmed in Quebec.
