VfB Stuttgart have fought back to gain a late 2-1 comeback cup victory at second division Paderborn after conceding an extraordinary own goal by Konstantinos Mavropanos.
Victory took Bundesliga club Stuttgart into the quarter-finals of the German Cup.
Mavropanos beat his goalkeeper Florian Muller with an intended backpass after a throw-in four minutes into the game. The German Football Federation tweeted that the effort from 48 metres was the furthest distance an own goal has been scored in competition history.
Newly signed Gil Diaz curled an equaliser in the 86th and Serhou Guirassy headed Stuttgart’s winner five minutes into stoppage time.
It was the first win for new Stuttgart coach Bruno Labbadia in his fourth game in charge.
Tuesday’s other last-16 game, kicking off later, is Union Berlin v Wolfsburg. Earlier Union gave upon an audacious attempt to sign former Real Madrid midfielder Isco with the club and players apparently unable to agree terms.
On Wednesday, cup holders RB Leipzig visit Hoffenheim and Mainz play record winners Bayern Munich. The remaining four games are next week.
