Sundowns legend on why rare breed Zwane is ‘not normal’

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Themba Zwane is lavished with praise by legend Hlompho Kekana, labelling the creative player as a rare breed and not normal.

The esteemed legend said the current Sundowns captain, Zwane is unbelievable, not normal and the credit he receives from the fans and legends is not enough.

For many, it becomes easy to identify a Sundowns without the man also called ‘Mshishi’ as Zwane is credited for making Masandawana dance in the heart of the park.

SUNDOWNS LEGEND ON WHY ZWANE IS NOT NORMAL

As a 33-year-old, Zwane is one of the most consistent players for the reigning DStv Premiership champions, and he is expected to lead Sundowns to yet another league triumph next season.

The 2016 CAF Champions League-winning skipper, Kekana says watching the Tembisa-born midfielder is a privilege because he is a rare breed.

“I don’t think he gets the credit he deserves, we think what he’s doing is normal but it’s not,” the Sundowns legend told Phakaaathi.

“He has been consistent for so long now and I was telling a friend of mine the other day that watching Themba play is such a privilege because I don’t think we will ever see a player who plays like him in short spaces and having to still entertain us. What an unbelievable player he is because he’s still winning titles.

“I can tell you now that he’s a player that can play between the lines in this new modern way of playing football. He doesn’t even lose the ball and everyone knows that when they go watch him play that he will do something different. With that said, it will be sad if we start comparing him with anybody because we just have to appreciate and celebrate him.”

Judging Zwane’s achievements which include seven league titles, six domestic cups, the CAF Champions League, and CAF Super Cup, there’s no doubt that the Bafana Bafana star is a legend on his own.

DOWNS LEGEND ON HOW HE HEARD ABOUT MSHISHI

Born in Zebediela and known for his trademark long-range and thunderous shots, the Sundowns legend reflects on how the retired Tsietsi Mahoa told him about Mshishi.

Mahoa was part of the SuperSport United and Bloemfontein Celtic set-up where he played with ‘KK’ and he admits playmaker was indeed special.

“I heard about Themba before I even met him through Tsietsi Mahoa and he told us that Themba Zwane will be one of the greatest players in South African football,” Kekana reflected.

“I also remember when I first came to Sundowns, Surprise Moriri told me that there’s this one kid who is very special.

“After I saw him, I agreed with Surprise that he’s quite special. We never doubted him and we knew that given an opportunity he was going to turn into something great.”
