Supercomputer BETSiE has predicted the potential winner of the 2023/24 Premier League season. Unfortunately, BETSiE’s result for Chelsea is disappointing as it put the club in the 7th position, just above Brighton.
According to BETSiE, Manchester City will win the Premier League, followed by Liverpool and Arsenal in second and third places, with Newcastle finishing in fourth. BETSiE put Manchester United and Tottenham in the 5th and 6th positions, respectively, leaving Chelsea at number 7. The supercomputer’s prediction is disappointing to fans and supporters who had high hopes for Chelsea.
BETSiE makes predictions using multiple data points, including expected goals for and against, shots for and against, and shots on target for and against each team. The supercomputer also adjusts the value of each shot as it does not consider all shots equal. After assigning an expected number of goals for and against each team, BETSiE enters the data into the current Premier League fixture list and predicts each club’s probability of losing, drawing, or winning each match, and then compiles the results. After that, the supercomputer simulates the season 20,000 times before providing final results.
Interestingly, although the supercomputer’s predictions do not favor Chelsea, betting odds on many recommended sites in the UK suggest that Chelsea will likely win their fair share of games. For example, they’re highly favoured among bookmakers for their two upcoming matches, against Fulham and Burnley, both away. However, bookies tend to agree with BETSiE, giving Chelsea odds of 200/1 to win the title this season.
According to a previous prediction, BETSiE put Chelsea in 6th position and Manchester United at number 4. However, since Manchester United has won 3 games while Chelsea only has one win, both teams are currently 8th and 14th, respectively. Interestingly, both BETSiE predictions expect Manchester City to win the league, with Everton, Luton, and Sheffield United as the last three on the table.
Chelsea’s Chance of Winning the Premier League
In the last three transfer windows, Chelsea has spent more than €1 billion (around £870 million) on several signings. This year, the club has signed 22 players, with Manchester City’s Cole Palmer as the most recent, costing £45 million. However, fans are yet to see exactly how these signings would impact Chelsea’s chance of climbing up the table to the number 1 position.
Following a disappointing performance as manager, the board sacked Graham Potter only a few months after also sacking Thomas Tuchel. Chelsea then appointed Mauricio Pochettino in a two-year contract, a deal many believe will bring some fortune to the club. Pochettino has quite the experience and has previously managed Southampton FC, Tottenham Hotspur, and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). The team believes that Pochettino has the character, leadership qualities, and standards of excellence required to serve the football club. But how much of this puts Chelsea in the best position for a win?
The 2022/23 Premier League season was one of the worst for Chelsea. The club only had 38 goals and 11 wins, ending the season in the second half of the table for the first time in 27 years. All of this was after Chelsea spent €690 million (£600 million) on signings. Unfortunately, the club could not reap the benefits of the heavy investment and is likely looking to the current season for better results.
Chelsea owner Todd Boehly has been criticized repeatedly for overspending on players, with analysts suggesting that his approach reflects his football inexperience. When former owner Roman Abramovich was still in control, the billionaire investor had director Marina Granovskaia and goalkeeping legend Petr Cech as part of his transfer advisory team. However, both Granovskaia and Cech left when Boehly took over.
Many are optimistic that Pochettino’s wealth of experience will significantly improve Chelsea’s chances of winning the Premier League title. However, it is essential to point out that Pochettino has never won one throughout his career. Nonetheless, the new manager has focused on reducing the bloated team to raise transfer funds and keep the team light. Fortunately, Pochettino’s efforts can ride on Chelsea’s success as the third most successful team in Premier League history, with five wins.
