Supercopa de Espana 2023: Spanish Super Cup fixtures, match schedule for Barcelona, Real Madrid, Valencia and Betis

The four most successful Spanish clubs from last season’s domestic competitions will clash in Saudi Arabia in the 2023 Supercopa de Espana (Spanish Super Cup).

The top two La Liga finishers from 2021/22 Real Madrid and Barcelona will take on the two 2021/22 Copa del Rey finalists Valencia and Real Betis in a mini four-team tournament in Riyadh.

Other European leagues feature similar Super Cup competitions like the Community Shield in England or the Trophee des Champions in France, but often they are one-off matches that kick off the domestic campaign. The Spanish federation (RFEF) has bucked that trend for the last few years, crafting a mid-season tournament that features four teams contesting the trophy.

Three of this year’s participants happen to occupy the top four spots in the current La Liga table, with only Valencia sitting outside of that group in 11th place. Barcelona currently lead the standings, with Real Madrid right on their heels in second and Real Betis in fourth.

Spanish Super Cup 2023 schedule, how it works

The Supercopa de Espana is the Spanish Super Cup, pitting the two most successful teams from the previous La Liga season against the domestic cup finalists from the same campaign.

The format for the Supercopa de Espana changed to a four-team competition in 2019, and the mini-tournament was moved to a neutral location (Saudi Arabia). The Supercopa features the La Liga winners and runners-up of the previous season, in addition to both Copa del Rey finalists.

The reigning La Liga champion faces the Copa del Rey runner-up in one semifinal, and the Copa del Rey winner faces the La Liga runner-up in the other semifinal. The winners of each semi matchup face off in the final for the silverware.

It’s not the case for 2023, but in the event that one or both of the top finishers in La Liga had also reached the Copa del Rey final, then the third-place La Liga finisher would have qualified, and fourth-place if necessary.

2023 Supercopa de Espana teams, fixtures

The matches in 2023 will be played in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, which is UTC +3 time zone, meaning the time zone is three hours ahead of the UK and eight hours ahead of Eastern Time in North America.

Both semifinals will kick off at 10 p.m. local time in Riyadh.

There is no third-place match contested in the Supercopa de Espana, so both losing sides from the semifinals will head home after suffering elimination.

UK: The Supercopa will be carried in the UK on LaLiga TV and ITV, with ITV’s streaming platform ITVX available for online viewing.

USA: The Supercopa will be shown on ESPN2, ABC, and ESPN Deportes with those televised matches streaming on fuboTV. ESPN’s streaming service ESPN+ will also carry streams in English and Spanish for subscribers.

Canada: The Supercopa matches are available in Canada on TSN platforms.

Australia: Fans in Australia can stream every match live and on demand on Optus Sport.

Why is the Spanish Super Cup played in Saudi Arabia?

The Spanish federation decided to move the Supercopa de Espana to Saudi Arabia for the 2019/20 tournament after the Saudi Arabian government agreed to pay €30 million for each edition of the competition through 2029.

While profitable, the decision to move the competition outside the country has not always been a popular one. In 2022, Athletic Bilbao midfielder Raul Garcia called it “complete nonsense” and claimed that “fans have been forgotten” because “football now is all about making money and finding sponsors.”

Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales defended the decision, saying, “We took a game that was forgotten in the middle of summer and made it into an international event.”

Spanish Super Cup prize money

While the prize money for the Supercopa de Espana does not approach the sums received by participants in the top European club competitions, it still offers the winner a decent payday.

The prize money for the 2023 edition of the Supercopa will be unevenly distributed, which has caused an uproar. The Spanish federation (RFEF) reportedly will pay pre-determined amounts to each club which are unequal.

For 2023, Barcelona and Real Madrid will each receive €2.8 million, Valencia will earn €1.7 million, and Real Betis will receive €750,000. Then, as part of the competition, the winner will earn €2 million while the runner-up will claim €1 million.

This has reportedly angered both Valencia and Real Betis. Betis reportedly submitted an internal complaint to the RFEF requesting even distributions based on competitive balance rather than pre-set amounts for each club. A lawyer for Valencia, meanwhile, spoke out against the distribution plan.

Last year there was an equitable model in place, as the competition paid out €3 million to the winner, while the runner-up was handed €2 million and all four semifinalists were given €800,000.

Real Madrid won the Supercopa de Espana in 2022 for the 12th time in club history. Los Blancos defeated Barcelona in the semifinals via an extra-time winner by Federico Valverde before topping Athletic Bilbao 2-0 in the final.

But Barcelona still have the most titles in Supercopa history, with 13 trophies.
