According to sources, Ataee has now woken up and has been behaving rudely towards hospital staff, showing no remorse for his actions.
“He does not appear to regret his actions,” an insider told German magazine BILD. “He is very rude to the staff and demands to be discharged from the hospital.”
Ataee is also experiencing leg paralysis as a result of surgery to remove a police bullet from his abdominal aorta, a procedure that has been described as miraculous by medical personnel.
The Federal Prosecutor’s Office has taken over the investigation, concluding that Ataee acted as a radical lone perpetrator with the intent to prevent criticism of Islam.
Ataee, who arrived in Germany from Afghanistan in 2015, lived with his wife and two children in Heppenheim.
Neighbours have noted a significant change in his behaviour over the past year, describing him as having become more reserved and aggressive.
Ataee remains in intensive care, guarded around the clock by two police officers. The next steps in his legal and medical proceedings are yet to be determined.
