Tipped to be one of the southern coast’s finest seaside locations, Mirissa Beach is a whale-watching hub and a stunning coastal paradise. Here’s what travellers should know before they visit the beach.
Time the Visit
Although Mirissa Beach is a year-round beach vacation hotspot, those who wish to make the most of their trip should head down to this area between December and March. This is not only the best time to visit Mirissa Beach in terms of idyllic weather conditions but also when whale-watching tours are in full swing. During this time, you can embark on an excursion to witness dolphins and whales frolicking off the coast of the beach.
Getting There
While it is possible to drive to Mirissa, those who prefer to take the scenic route should hop on a bus bound for Matara City from the Fort Bus Station in Colombo. Whether you are heading to your base at the Sri Sharavi Beach Villas & Spa or any one of the other hotels in Mirissa, this is arguably the perfect way to reach Mirissa Beach as it offers spectacular views of the southern shoreline.
Two Sections
Most tourists may not be aware of it, but Mirissa Beach is divided into two parts. Travellers who are accessing Mirissa Beach from the main road should turn and walk to the left if they are in search of a more quiet and secluded section of the beach and head right if they are in search of water sports activities and the crowds.
Wining and Dining
Lined with resorts, beach bars, and seafood restaurants, tourists need not venture far to grab a delectable meal during a day spent at Mirissa Beach.
