Often, the NBA feels like an arms race. It’s widely understood that star players win basketball games, so the organization that collects the most is typically seen as having the best chance of winning the most games.
In theory, that works. In practice, it usually works. With that said, sometimes, star-studded lineups fall short of expectations. Just ask the Los Angeles Lakers, or to a lesser extent, the Chicago Bulls.
The Lakers certainly entered 2021-22 with star power. Between LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook, they may have had the most name recognition in the NBA.
Still, a 33-win season, to put it politely, fell short of expectations.

Meanwhile, the Bulls had their own flashy names between Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan, and Nikola Vucevic. Their 46 wins and a first-round exit weren’t the colossal failures that the Lakers’ season was, but they surely had their sights set higher.
