Former US President Donald Trump described what his shooting felt like on social media and urged the country to stand together, while US President Joe Biden said everyone should condemn the violence.
Trump said he immediately knew something was wrong when he heard the shots, ”and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realised then what was happening.”
Later in the day, he posted a second statement to his Truth Social platform.
“In this moment, it is more important than ever that we stand united, and show our true character as Americans, remaining strong and determined,” he said.
Biden, who spoke with Trump last night, also said the country had to unite.
“Look, there is no place in America for this kind of violence. It’s sick, it’s sick,” he said.
“It’s one of the reasons why we have to unite this country. We cannot allow for this to be happening. We cannot be like this. We cannot condone this.”
